Company Profile

Background

Jamaica Energy Partners (JEP) is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) that began commercial operations in October 1995, through its ownership of the Doctor Bird Power Plant. The Doctor Bird Power Plant encompasses the company’s production facilities and is located at Old Harbour Bay, in the parish of St. Catherine.
The initial net electrical output was 74.2MW generated by eight reciprocating engine generating sets on one barge. The company’s generating capacity was expanded in March 2006 with the addition of three generating units totalling 50.2MW on a second barge, which is located about 300 yards from the original. This brings the total present net electricity capacity to 124.4MW generated by eleven generating sets, located on two floating barges.
Today, JEP is the largest IPP and produces almost 20% of the electrical energy on the Island’s Power Grid.

Environment and Community

JEP prides itself in being socially responsible and, therefore, has taken significant interest in the community in which it resides. JEP takes a special interest in the areas of education, health, training and sports.

60 MW Plant

In accordance with projections, Jamaica needs to have additional 300MW over the next 10 years to service its power needs and this project goes a significant way in getting there. Failure to achieve this would result in widespread power outages and severe hardship to the people of Jamaica.
To satisfy the country’s electric power demand in the medium term, the Office for Utilities Regulation (OUR) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 60 MW of additional generation.
JEP won this bid and now intends to construct a land-based, 60 MW Power Plant in Western Kingston
