Thirty years ago, Jamaica Energy Partners (JEP) embarked on a bold journey to strengthen the nation’s energy independence with the commissioning of its first power barge, Doctor Bird I, stationed in Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine. It was a pioneering move — one that marked the beginning of a legacy built on innovation, reliability, and a deep sense of national duty.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! As an Independent Power Producer (IPP), JEP played a pivotal role in reshaping Jamaica’s energy landscape, providing stable and efficient generation capacity to the national grid. What began with one barge soon expanded with the commissioning of Doctor Bird II, increasing our output and reaffirming our commitment to powering Jamaica’s growth through excellence and innovation.
But our story extends far beyond energy production. For JEP, true power lies in community. For three decades, the people of Old Harbour Bay have stood beside us — and we, in turn, have invested in their growth and development. Through our corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we have supported education through scholarships, health and dental fairs, skills and fishermen training programmes, seasonal employment, and internships — empowering residents to build stronger, more resilient lives.
Our commitment to grassroots development has also extended to the cultural and sporting life of St. Catherine, through support for the Old Harbour Bay Regatta, the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s Festival Queen Competition, and a longstanding partnership with the St. Catherine Cricket Association for the JEP Cricket League. Our ongoing donations and support to the Spanish Town Hospital further demonstrate our enduring commitment to improving community well-being and healthcare access. Together, these efforts reflect a shared vision; one where community growth, cultural pride, and national progress move hand in hand.
JEP’s impact also extends to environmental stewardship and public health. Through strategic partnerships and board representation on the Jamaica Environmental Trust (JET), Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT), and the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust, we continue to champion environmental preservation and sustainability across the island.
Today, as we celebrate 30 years of service, we take pride in knowing that our contribution to Jamaica’s energy grid has not only fueled homes, schools, and industries, but also created pathways for opportunity, empowerment, and transformation. From one barge to two, from a single vision to a sustained legacy; our journey has been powered by people, purpose, and partnership.
As we look to the future, Jamaica Energy Partners remains committed to doing even more, sustainably. Guided by innovation, community-centered growth, and a continued drive toward cleaner energy, we will play our part in building a stronger, greener, and more resilient Jamaica.
Here’s to 30 years of power, progress, and possibility — and to a brighter energy future ahead!
