Other volunteers included ushers (members of the CSR team/community members/JEP Group scholarship recipients) and nurses who both ensured all patients completed their blood pressure/glucose/urine, height and weight checks before sitting with the doctor. The team of doctors, including general practitioners, pediatric residents and an obstetrician/gynaecologist, contributed as much as 8 hours of their workday, giving back to those who can’t afford the high medical consulting fees.
Following each visit, the ushers led the patients to the pharmacy area, to fill their prescriptions at no cost to them. Old Harbour Bay residents had their scripts scanned and sent to the nearest pharmacy. Residents of Western and Eastern Kingston benefited from the island’s Drug Serv on-site health facility and mobile units. Those who needed further testing or medical attention not offered at the health fairs received referrals to see a doctor at the nearest hospital.
Residents also received gift bags comprising diabetic starter kits, eyeglasses, hygiene products, walkers/rollators, pain medication, skin ointments, fabric totes, water bottles, pens, notebooks, pill counters and stress balls courtesy of our partners from Food for the Poor and the National Health Fund. Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Jamaica as well as the country Registrar’s General Department extended their services to the residents in Old Harbour Bay and have been doing so at JEP’s health fairs since its inaugural stating. Other partners include Jamaica’s Ministry of Health and Wellness, Public Health Department, Family Planning Association, Sagicor, Seprod, members of the Charles Chin Loy Health Centre, Kingston Public Hospital, Spanish Town Hospital and University of the West Indies Hospital.
